What Can I Expect

Providing Health and Balance Through Chiropractic

Going to the Chiropractor is a new experience for many. Your first visit to the chiropractor will be about getting to know the chiropractor and discussing your history, current condition, and goals.

As with any doctor's visit, you'll start by finishing some new patient paperwork. Upon meeting with the doctor, you'll discuss your general concerns as well as have the chance to ask any questions you may have. Then, a physical examination will be performed that includes a number of orthopedic tests.  Once these tasks are completed, the doctor will decide if additional tests or radiological imaging are necessary prior to treatment.

Upon review of the essential information, the doctor will create a treatment plan.  This treatment plan typically includes chiropractic adjustments or manipulations but may also include other forms of manual therapy such as the Graston Technique or the use of physiotherapies such as electrical muscle stimulation or ultrasound.  If appropriate, home exercises, nutritional supplements and lifetyle modifications may also be recommended to speed recovery and reduce discomfort.

The number of visits to a chiropractor and the frequency of those visits is be based a patient's specific condition. For example, in the initial phases of the treatment of an acute condition such as sciatica, treatments will be more frequent for the first few weeks and decrease as the condition improves.   Frequency of visits, modication of the treatment plan is reassessed based on the patient's response to treatments.

More information regarding chiropractic treatments and expectations may be found on this website under Q & A and also the American Chiropractic Association's website: www.acatoday.org.
